Constitution Day 2024: Controversy Surrounds Speakers for Joint Parliament Sitting
On November 26, 2024, India marks the 75th anniversary of its Constitution, a day that commemorates the adoption of one of the world’s longest and most influential national constitutions. As the nation comes together to honor the legacy of the Constitution, a heated debate has emerged between the Modi government and opposition parties regarding the list of speakers for the joint parliamentary sitting scheduled to take place on this historic occasion.
The Controversy
The event, which will take place in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, is set to feature addresses by President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. While the government has made the seating arrangements and finalized the list of speakers, opposition leaders, particularly from the INDIA bloc (a coalition of opposition parties), have raised concerns over their exclusion from the list of speakers.
In a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, the opposition parties requested that leaders of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha be given the opportunity to speak during the event. They argue that, in keeping with the traditions of Indian parliamentary democracy, the leaders of opposition should also have a chance to contribute their thoughts during such a historic occasion.
The letter expressed that, "In the best traditions and interests of Parliamentary democracy, the Leaders of Opposition in both Houses should also be given an opportunity to speak on this historic occasion." The opposition's plea underscores their desire to participate in the event that celebrates the Constitution, the cornerstone of India’s democracy.
The Government's Response
The Modi government, however, has countered the opposition's claim. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded by stating that the Prime Minister would not be addressing the joint sitting, and the key speakers would be the President, Vice President, and Speaker of the Lok Sabha. He also clarified that the seating arrangements had been made for the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on the dais.
Rijiju expressed discontent with the opposition's reaction, accusing them of criticizing the event without understanding the actual arrangements. He emphasized that the government's approach was in line with the solemn nature of the occasion.
The Significance of Constitution Day
Despite the political controversy, the 75th Constitution Day remains an important milestone for the country. It is a day to reflect on the achievements of India’s democratic journey and the ideals enshrined in the Constitution. On this day, we commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, which came into effect on January 26, 1950, marking India’s transformation into a republic.
In addition to the speeches, the event will feature the release of a commemorative coin, a stamp, and books on the Constitution to honor this momentous occasion.
Looking Ahead
The ongoing debate over the speakers for the joint sitting highlights the persistent tensions between the ruling government and the opposition, even during occasions meant to unify the nation. While the government insists on following the established procedures, the opposition continues to argue for a more inclusive approach, reflecting the diverse voices of the nation.
As the nation celebrates 75 years of the Indian Constitution, the significance of this document—more than just a legal framework—continues to shape the democratic discourse in India. Whether or not the opposition leaders are given a chance to speak, the event will undoubtedly remind the citizens of India of the power and legacy of the Constitution in shaping the future of the country.
